Larry Foster Obituary
Larry Lamar Foster, age 77, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday morning, January 16, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford Mississippi. Those that knew Larry, knew he was a fighter. Overcoming many heart surgeries and procedures, he always came back strong. He truly fought the good fight and finished his race well. Larry never quit encouraging his family to do the same.
Larry was born September 25, 1947, to Alma Harris Foster and James Lamar Foster in Pontotoc, Mississippi. A proud Bobcat, he was a 1965 graduate of Algoma High School, where he was a member of the school's first football team. He loved to tell people he played in the first ballgame he ever saw. In 1966, one month after he married the love of his life, Brenda Kay Ferguson, he was drafted into the US Army. He served for two years, one of which was spent in Vietnam. After the Army, Larry began working as a plumber. He later served as the maintenance man for Algoma Water Association and other water systems in the county. Later he worked for the US Postal Service as a rural carrier out of Randolph, Mississippi.
Larry was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying deer hunting, riding horses and growing and making sorghum molasses. Most recently his favorite hobbies were fishing and camping. During this time, he met numerous fishermen that became lifelong friends. Larry was an active member of Algoma Baptist Church serving as a deacon and on various committees for many years.
Services will be Sunday, January 19 at 2:00 at Algoma Baptist Church. Visitation will also be at the church Saturday, January 18 from 5 to 8 and from 1:00 until service time on Sunday. Brother Don Smith, Brother Chad Higgins, Brother Philip Jackson, and son, Scott Foster, will take part in the service. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery. Baldwin Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Brenda, his daughter Susan Fowlkes (Doyle), his son, Scott Foster (Jill). He was a proud Papa to four grandsons: Michael Scott Foster, Curt Harmon, John Foster Harmon, and Preston Foster. He is survived by two brothers, Dyerl Foster (Regina) and Kevin Foster (Regenia), one brother-in-law, Terry Self (Jill), numerous nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and a sister Brenda Foster Self.
Pallbearers will be Michael Scott Foster, Curt Harmon, John Foster Harmon, Preston Foster, Ronnie Self, Sam Self, Matthew Foster, and Chase Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday school class and his fishing buddies.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Algoma Baptist Church Family Life Center, which was a project dear and near to Larry's heart. Donations can be sent to Algoma Baptist Church, care of Jennifer Duncan, 2248 Jefferson Road West, Houlka, MS 38850.
