Monique Sorrell Obituary
Monique Ama Sorrell
Marcy, NY
Monique Ama Sorrell, 74, of Marcy, passed into the loving arms of her God at Wynn Hospital on Saturday, July 19. She knew the love of her family and friends before her passing.
Monique was born June 29, 1951, to Arthur and Angeline (Amatucci) Guastella, in Brooklyn, NY. She received her education at Long Island schools, and both her bachelor's and master's degree at SUNY Potsdam. It was in Potsdam that Monique met the love of her life - Carson E. Sorrell, of Chateaugay, NY. They married on June 17, 1972, in East Islip, NY.
Monique made her career in education, establishing herself as a 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Notre Dame and Kennedy schools in the Utica school district. She touched countless lives through her firm, but fair approach as a teacher, including, at times, her own children. She shared a deep bond with many colleagues throughout her career and treasured her regular lunch meetings with retired teacher friends.
Monique was a faithful member of St. Paul's parish, in Whitesboro, and had previously been involved with the church choir. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother to her four children and a grandmother to her three grandchildren, making sure each felt loved and special. She savored visits to Long Island beaches and Gananoque, Canada. She enjoyed musicals and other performances. She also found pleasure in tending her garden, reading mysteries and science fiction, birdwatching and cheering on the Philadelphia Flyers.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Carson. She is also survived by her son Matt, and his wife Christina (Manthos), of Beacon; her daughters, Jennifer, of Marcy; Laura Hertle, and her husband Michael, of Kingston; and Stephanie Sorrell-White, and her husband Eric, of Whitesboro. She is also survived by her three cherished grandchildren: Aislinn, of Kingston; and Noah and Connor, of Whitesboro. She is also survived by her brother Richard Guastella, and his wife Sue, of Deerfield Beach, FL., and sister Lisa Guastella, of London, England. She was predeceased by her mother in 1995 and her father in 2007. She also is survived by several close and special friends. She also had a special pet dog companion - Maverick.
The family thanks Dr. Sikder and his staff for his guidance and care for the past ten years. The family also thanks Dr. Shwe Win, at Wynn Hospital, for her compassion during a difficult time.
Family and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated by the Rev. John Canorro on Friday July 25, 2025, at 11:30 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church 16 Park Ave Whitesboro. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro.
