Mary Soule Obituary
RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Mary P. Soule, age 99, a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left this world peacefully on Saturday February 15, 2025 at the Sitrin Health Care Center, New Hartford.
Mary was born on October 9, 1925 in Little Falls, a daughter to the late James and Agnes Lucey Potter. She was raised and educated in Little Falls, and was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy. On April 24, 1948 she married Clauson Soule, Jr. in Little Falls, a blessed and loving union of fifty-two years until his passing on January 5, 2001. After their marriage they relocated to Richfield Springs where they raised their family.
Mary's vibrant spirit touched the hearts of so many in her life. She resided in her home on Canadarago Lake for over 70 years, and she could often be found on her deck, reading and enjoying the view. She had a special love for Twitchell Lake in the Adirondacks and loved sitting in front of the fire with family and friends. She loved the sun and beach and traveled to Ogunquit, Maine every summer with family. These were just a few of the special places where she found peace.
A true culinary mastermind, Mary expressed her love through baking. The aroma of her famous pies and cookies wafting from her kitchen was an invitation to gather. Family would travel near and far, to engage in the warmth of her home and the traditions she so effortlessly fostered. Each gathering, bursting at the seams, was filled with joy, laughter, and the unmistakable sense of comfort.
Mary was also an expert knitter, creating beautiful treasures for her loved ones. Each stitch was infused with her love, making sweaters, scarves, and blankets. Precious heirlooms that will be passed down through generations.
A hardworking woman, Mary worked in the gift shop in Buchanan Hardware in Richfield Springs for many years, was 15 years employed at Momentum Technologies (formerly Mohawk Data Sciences) in Herkimer and 17 years employed as a receptionist at the Fennimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, retiring in 2011, at the age of 86.
She is survived by her four sons; David Soule and his wife Patricia of Cooperstown, Richard Soule and his wife Cheryl of Richfield Springs, Gary Soule and his wife Nancy of Clinton, Greg Soule and his wife Patricia of Clinton, two daughters; Rebecca Ward and her husband Bruce of Herkimer, Patricia Abbenda and her husband David of Pattersonville, twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband Clauson, she was preceded in death by her two brothers Bernard Potter, William Potter, and her sister, Helen Kerzick.
Mary was not just a matriarch; she was the heart of her family; a guiding beacon whose love knew no bounds. As we mourn her passing, we celebrate the beautiful life she lived, the lessons she taught us, and the countless celebrations that will never be forgotten.
A funeral service for Mrs. Soule is being planned for this spring at a time to be announced. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
As the family follows Mary's passion for history, they ask that expressions of sympathy be made in her memory to The Fenimore Art Museum at: https://fenimoreartmuseum.org/support#donate-tab
Rest peacefully, Mary. Your spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
