James McDowell Obituary

James Carlyle McDowell

August 14, 1943 - December 9, 2024

James Carlyle "Jim" McDowell, 81, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sue McDowell; his two sons, Glenn McDowell (and his wife, Kelly McDowell) and Mason McDowell; and three cherished grandchildren, William, Catherine, and Connor, who brought him endless joy and pride.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1943, Jim was a proud graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy, Class of 1962, and later earned his degree from Guilford College. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served his country with honor and integrity, values that he carried throughout his life.

Jim was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he found solace and strength in his faith. St. Paul's was a cornerstone of his life, witnessing not only his marriage to Sue McDowell but also the baptism and confirmation of his two sons.

Jim was predeceased by his beloved dog, Makenzie, who was a loyal and cherished companion in his later years.

He will be remembered as a gentle soul, a loving husband, and a steadfast father who always put his family first. His calm strength and unconditional support were a constant source of comfort to those he loved.

A private service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Contributions in Jim's memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

James Carlyle McDowell leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and kindness that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Jim was such a nice, low-key man, and he never said anything ugly about anyone. He was fun to be with and we´ll all miss his company.

My deepest condolences to you, Sue, and your family for Jimmy's passing. I knew Jimmy from St. Paul's church beginning with EYC in my early years. I will remember him always as a kind boy and then man with the sweetest smile for everyone. He was very fun-loving and loved a good joke in his youth. I lost touch with him lately but won't forget him as I last saw him smiling at me in church. I know you will miss him terribly.

I knew Jim for many years & always thought he was a very nice fellow. He always had everyone's best interest @ heart. He & his family lived only a block away from me & my family. The VERY first Christmas my family moved to Country Club Rd he brought me a Christmas tie. I'll never forget that! Sad to know he is now gone & not with us. It's been many years not seeing each other. We were almost the same age, only two months separated us.
