James Matthews Obituary

James Thomas Matthews

Oct 3, 1932 - Nov 23, 2024

Mr. James Thomas Matthews was born October 3, 1932 to Gwyn C. and Ada Matthews in East Bend, North Carolina. He was the youngest of 13 children and the last living sibling. James graduated from Yadkin High School in Boonville, North Carolina. James was married to Shirley Jean Glenn Matthews. They were married for 60 years until her death in 2018. James and Shirley were blessed with four children, Beverly, Alicia, James "Donnie" and Janeia. Mr. Matthews served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. After being honorably discharged, he worked for Bassick Sack for four years. James retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company with 28 years of service. Mr. Matthews was a faithful member of Winston-Salem First for over 30 years. He loved his church family. He served as an usher and was a member of the Legacy Group. James loved to garden. He loved hunting rabbits with his prized blue blood beagle. His second passion was fishing. When he worked at RJR, no one knew him as James because everyone called him "Catfish". One day he received a call asking for James Matthews while at work, but no one knew who that was. James raised goats. He began with one for milk, but soon he had a herd of about 30-40. James said goats made terrific lawn mowers. He is survived by his children: Beverly (Melvin) Anthony, Alicia Wall, James "Donnie" (Susanne) Matthews, and Janeia (Jonathan) Knox; six grandchildren, Tiffany (Frank) Wilson, Eric (Erin) Anthony, Brandon Matthews, Xavier, Nicholas, and Alyssa Knox; four great-grandsons: Caden and Asa Wilson, Easton and Everson Anthony; sisters-in-law, Peggy Glenn Littlejohn and Brenda (Mack) Steadman; brother-in-law, Clyde Glenn; caregivers, Che' Collins and Aaron Barnes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service for Mr. Matthews will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment in Woodland Cemetery.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Matthew´s Family in the Loss of Mr. Tom. He and Ms. Shirley were wonderful Friends and Neighbors. He was a fine Christian Man who was always willing to help in anyway. I have fond memories of him helping me with my goats shortly after moving to East Bend. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

Tommy was a friend, who helped me compile his family history in Yadkin County. He was an outstanding man and will be missed. Our prayers go out to his family and friends during this time.
