Herbert Marshall
Sep 9, 1950 - Dec 10, 2024
Herbert Edward Marshall, age 74, of Pinnacle, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday night, December 10, 2024. Born in Stokes County on September 9, 1950, he was the son of the late Herbert Fulton and Dorothy Newsome Marshall.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 53 years, Susan Jones Marshall; his daughter, Kelli (Barry) Marshall; his grandson, Ben Marshall; his brother, Wayne Marshall; and his nieces and nephews, Courtney (Jason) Henry, Dylan Henry and Holden Henry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Avery Marshall; and his sister, Nancy Marshall.
Eddie was passionate about many things: Running marathons, collecting vintage signs and memorabilia, rescuing dogs and restoring old buildings. Before his illness, he ran every day. He recorded nearly 60,000 miles in his running log, which included both the Boston and the New York Marathons. His collection of medals and t-shirts reflected his proficiency, and they could fill a closet.
His collection of vintage signs included seasonal advertisements and Christmas memorabilia. The collection was diverse and eclectic, including everything from Cheerwine to retired street signs. If you wanted it, Eddie probably had it in one of his barns.
But, his real passion was rescuing dogs and restoring old farmhouses and barns. After retiring from Alltel, Eddie Joined forces with his friend, Roger Lawson, and began restoration work. You could find the pair riding across Stokes County in his old Ford truck, covered with stickers and rust; his rescue dogs, Herbie or Thelma, sitting in the front seat between them. Once every job was completed, a trademark quilt square, painted by his daughter Kelli, was mounted to the structure, indicating a job was completed by "White Trash Construction."
It is bittersweet that Eddie passed so close to his favorite holiday, Christmas. For many years, dressed as Santa, he and Susan visited local nursing homes and senior centers. His collection of vintage Santas and Christmas signs are found in their home, surrounding buildings and the barn on Perch Road.
Eddie fought for months and years to beat his lymphoma diagnosis. He did not want to give up! But, after exhausting all options at the Novant Cancer Center, he was moved to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, and eventually back to his home under Hospice Home care. The dedication of his many caregivers was inspirational and greatly appreciated by his family and friends. The family would like to extend a thank you to all of the family and friends that helped and supported them through this journey; including Thelmas home away from home family, Bobby and Crystal Jones.
Finally, Eddie was a supporter of Gram Rescue Ranch for dogs, a non-profit animal rescue organization in Winston-Salem, for dogs that have been abused or abandoned. His last dog, Thelma, was rescued from Gram and donations are always appreciated. Donations may be made by contacting them at
[email protected].
Additionally, donations may be made in his memory to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Pinnacle, NC.
Eddie was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
