Peter Matyascik Obituary

Peter P. Matyascik, 92, of the White Bear section of Summit Hill, entered into eternal rest Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Carbon campus. He was born in Andreas, PA to the late Peter G. and Anna (Ochran) Matyascik where he attended a one room schoolhouse and helped maintain the family farm. The family moved to Summit Hill in his teenage years where he graduated from Summit Hill High School in 1951. Thereafter, he joined the United States Air Force stationed in Lubbock, Texas, working as an airplane mechanic during the Korean conflict. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Fay A. (Whitehead) Matyascik, in 1953, returning to Texas where they started their family. After leaving the service, he came back to Carbon County, PA, and attended machinist school, working for multiple companies, Western Electric, Keystone Lamp Manufacturing Company, and finally Mack Truck as a tool and die maker, where he retired in 1994. Pete was multi-talented, an inventor of sorts, fixing farm equipment and all types of machinery at the family farm and for family and friends over the years, building a motor boat in the basement of his parents home during high school to eventually building an ice boat which he used on the Mauch Chunk Lake multiple times for family fun days, doing autobody repair, assembly and spray painting, and ultimately building his own stone home, masonry and all, from rocks he handpicked from the local mountains. His favorite hobbies were hunting, small game in earlier years, with his favorite being deer hunting with rifle, bow and muzzle loader. Another well known hobby of his was attracting purple martin birds that migrate from Jamaica to nest each year in PA from March through August at his home with the multiple bird houses he built and erected each year. He loved the outdoors and nature but especially enjoyed family gatherings with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his kind, gentle, and quiet demeanor, and, especially for his unsurmountable patience in all of his endeavors. Surviving are his three children, son Peter D. Matyascik and his wife Debra Reiber of Summit Hill, son Gregory J Matyascik of Nesquehoning, daughter, Victoria J. Tessitore of Jim Thorpe, a brother Bernard and his wife Nancy (Shoemaker) Matyascik of White Bear, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Fay A. Whitehead, sister, Mary Makara, and two infant sisters, a brother, Joseph, brother-in-law, Michael Makara, a daughter-in-law, Marianne McGinley (wife of son Gregory) and a son-in-law, Joseph S. Tessitore (husband of daughter Victoria) Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025 at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley, 462 W. Ludlow St., Summit Hill. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, White Bear, Summit Hill. Calling Hours are on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at the church. A few decades ago, when we bought our first home, Pete and Fay ended up being wonderful neighbors for 14 years. We fondly remember Pete (who reminded me of my dad with his quiet demeanor, willingness to lend a hand, and mechanical skills), taking us and our kids flying across that lake on his ice boat, diligently putting up those purple martin houses every spring, sitting on the front porch, and with Fay, welcoming us into their home numerous times. We looked out for each other, and we cherish the memories. We extend our condolences to Pete, Greg, Vicki, and the rest of the family.
