Gloria Canales Obituary
She is preceded in death by her parents, Carlos and Antonina Galvan; her husband, Ramiro Canales; 2 brothers, Carlos Galvan, Jr. and Homero Galvan.
Born in Linares, Nuevo León Mexico, January 28, 1936. Gloria was a passionate advocate for the arts and culture. She was a proud ambassador of her Mexican heritage. For 44 years, Gloria owned and operated the Gloria G Canales Mexican Folklore School of Dance in Harlingen, Texas.
Despite her many accomplishments, Gloria remained humble and dedicated to her family. She married the love of her life Ramiro Canales and had 3 beautiful daughters, Gloria Elizabeth (Joe) Hinojosa, Patricia C. Gonzales (Ray Galvan, Jr.) and Connie C. Perez (Carlos A). She was a doting grandmother to Nicholas Alfaro, Noah M. Remi Rodriguez, Elizabeth Michelle Anderson and Joseph A. Hinojosa, and a great-grandmother to Grace, Carolina, Lillie Kate and Capri and her brother, Gilberto Galvan (Bernie), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin Tuesday at 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM and a rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024, departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 10:30 AM for a 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria.
Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

I remember Mrs. Canales from the ANGF (Asociacion Nacional de Grupos Folkloricos) conferences. She hosted an ANGF conference, was on the board of directors for ANGF, and always brought her students to the conferences in the 1980's and 1990's. That's how I met her. ANGF is having its 50th anniversary in 2024. I am on the board. If her daughter could reach out to me, I'd appreciate it. [email protected]
Ms. Canales left her mark on folklorico in her hometown and worldwide through ANGF and her many other folklorico accomplishments. She will be dearly missed.

Rest in the peace that only Jesus provides, sweet lady. To her family, my heart-felt condolences. May you find comfort in knowing that Mrs. Canales was very loved and respected. Our granddaughter, Chelsea, learned a lot from the example set forth by Mrs. Canales. Your precious mom will forever be remembered with great love, respect, and admiration. Thank y'all for sharing her with us and the world. May you all take comfort in knowing that she is peacefully resting in the arms of Jesus.

I worked for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce formally named the Mexican American Chamber of Commerce under the Presidency of Mrs. Canales. She was an outstanding individual, working hard for the Harlingen community. She was an honorable person, was proud of her culture and her craft in dance. She is one of kind a true legend.
