Robert SCHMIDT Obituary

Of Roseville, MN, Age 89 Passed away peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home on September 24, 2023, surrounded in the love of his family and friends. "Bob" was preceded in death by his wife Dolores; and his sister Jackie Petrowske. He is survived by children Jodee (Tom) Welsh, Jim (Nora) and Jerry (Julie); seven grandchildren Matthew (Olivia), Cody, Jamie (Will), Annie, Brett (Kelly), Daniel (Shelby), Brendan; and four great-grandchildren Kaelynn, Kayla, Jack and Avery. He is also survived by his brother Mark (Mary Ellen); sister-in-law Darlene Krenke; brother-in-law Charles (Kris) Massie; and many loving nieces and nephews. Bob grew up in West St. Paul until his family moved to the East Side so he could play hockey at Johnson High School. He was proud to play for the Governors and graduated in 1952. Bob went on to play hockey for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, graduating in 1957. He later pursued a Master's degree and Specialist degree in education administration. Bob served in the United States Army for two years, where he also played hockey on the U.S. national team. Bob's life-long love of hockey had him involved in the sport in one way or another his entire life as a player, coach, referee, goal judge, and scout. He coached various levels throughout the years, including his 1965 Mounds View Bantam National team. He was a goal judge at the U of M and a long-time scout in the NHL for the Washington Capitals and the Nashville Predators. And always, always remained an avid supporter and fan of the game. He was a physical education and health teacher at Johanna Jr. High and Irondale High School for 30-plus years before retiring at age 59. He had a long run in his retirement years where he spent his time fishing and enjoying family and friends. Bob will be lovingly remembered for his kind nature—a gentle man—as well as the caring and knowledgeable teacher, coach, and mentor he was. Bob courageously battled Alzheimer's with dignity for over eight years. We are so grateful he maintained most of his life-long memories and remembered his family and friends until the moment he passed. Memorial is planned at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave. W., Roseville, MN on November 28th, with a visitation at 9:30am and service at 10:30am, followed by a luncheon at the church. Private interment to follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the family, which will be used to further the work of "Foundation For His Ministry" in Oaxaca, Mexico (where granddaughter Annie is a Sponsorship Coordinator) and to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Schmidt was my P.E. teacher at Johanna Junior High in the mid 70's. He guided us through soccer, wrestling, track & field and ballroom dancing, among other things. I remember being so proud of him when he was an official at the State Hockey Tournament. There wasn't time made to hear his stories, but his experiences made him the man he was, which was a very good man and mentor/coach to us fledgling men. God's grace to you as you grieve richly.
