Joseph McGowan Obituary

Joseph "Big Joe" McGowan passed away on Wednesday at the age of 67. He was born on Sept. 23, 1956, and left this world deeply loved by surviving family.

Joe is survived by his sisters, Lori Rizzi, and Kelly Russell and her husband, Billy Russell. He is also survived by his children, Nikki Kaleta and her husband, Joseph Kaleta; Katrina Lawler; and Joseph Lawler. Joe was a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews and a beloved grandfather. In his final years, Joe found comfort and support from his tenant, Chrissy Clark and his friend, John Wilcha. Chrissy and John were both incredibly helpful and provided invaluable companionship and assistance. The family greatly appreciates their kindness and care.

Upon passing, Joe was undoubtedly welcomed into the embrace of his loving wife, Kathleen McGowan, who had gone before him. They are now reunited in eternity. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Angelo; his parents; and several aunts and uncles.

Throughout his life, Joe made a significant impact on the world around him. He dedicated many years of his career as a strong and passionate advocate for workers' rights, leading the union bargaining efforts at the Scranton Lace Company. His tireless dedication to the labor movement made a lasting difference in the lives of countless workers.

Later in his career, Joe transitioned to the field of mental health, where he continued to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those he served. His compassion, empathy and commitment to improving the mental well-being of others left an enduring impact on the community he served until his retirement.

Joe McGowan will be remembered for his kindness and his warm spirit that brought comfort and joy to those around him. He was a source of strength and a steady, calming presence in the lives of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
