Betty Dupont Obituary

Betty Walters Dupont, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed in Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette, Louisiana on May 29, 2024 at the age of 76. Betty was born on August 18, 1947 in Lafayette to Edward E. Walters and Annie M. Walters. As a girl, she was active in Girl Scouts, speech, debate, and cheerleading. She graduated from Mt. Carmel Girls Catholic School and furthered her education by attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana where she was a member of the debate team and Phi Mu Sorority. Betty graduated with a Masters in Communications Studies from Louisiana State University. She later completed an M.D. degree from the University of Health Sciences Antigua and then returned to LSU to work on a PhD in Communications Studies. Betty spent the majority of her career in education working as an English teacher, as the Assistant Director of Title I at the State Department of Education (22 years), and later as a grant writer and teacher at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in Baton Rouge (14 years) before retiring in 2022. Betty loved her students and was known for her optimistic energetic personality. She also contributed as a member of the Baton Rouge Downtown Lions Club, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, the Ladies of the Cathedral, and as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Her loves were learning about anything and everything, teaching, traveling, going to the movies, and attending LSU sporting events. She was very outgoing, could make anyone feel welcome, and loved discussing history. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Irby Dupont. She is survived by her son Edward Sellers (Ashley); her sister Bonnie Sarver; and her grandson, Nathan Sellers. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Louisiana Lions League for Crippled Children at https://www.lionscamp.org/donate. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at St. Joseph Cathedral, 401 Main St., Baton Rouge on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., consisting of a Visitation from 9 to 9:30 a.m., Eulogies from 9:30 to 10 a.m., and a mass from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow at The Protestant Cemetery in Lafayette.

I was most saddened to learn about Betty's passing. We worked together in Title I for several years and I always enjoyed being with her. She was most knowledgeable and professional. She was equally warm and friendly.
My prayers are with her family and friends.

Betty was an ever beautiful friend and Chi Omega sorority sister while at USL. She was very friendly, very smart and leadership in most of her extracurricular activities. We are all so sorry to hear of her passing, as I´ve shared this sad news with our mutual Chi O friends. Her continued resume post collegiate years is a further testament as to how she helped so many. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

It was a pleasure having you as a teacher. It was a pleasure to hear your stories and all the great fun we´ve had together, including with the other students. You were a magnificent teacher, and I will continue to do what I´ve done to make you proud.

Ms. Betty and I worked together at LDOE and LSVI. She was a very kind soul and a true southern lady. I loved listening to her many stories, especially the ones of her visits to to her son, daughter-in-law and precious grandson. My prayers are with you all. Ms. Betty will be missed by so many!
