Sarah Yancey Obituary

Yancey, Sarah C.

Sarah C. Yancey, of Glendale, MO, died on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Evelyn's House of BJC Hospice after a 2-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. She is survived by her husband J. Robert "Bob" Keightley; children Amy Shinohara (Uto Shinohara) of Wilmette, IL, and John "Burt" Skidmore (Kim Conley) of Chugiak, AK; grandchildren Tyler and Peyton Shinohara and Gillian and Tara Skidmore; siblings Mary Southerly of Port Republic, VA and Bernie Yancey of Elkton, VA; and many nephews and nieces as well as other extended family members.

Born on May 4, 1943, in Charlottesville, VA to parents Sue and Eiler Yancey, she was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in the USA (PC-USA) as well as a member of Interfaith Partnership. She was a VA state debate champion in high school, and continued this work later in her career as a speech and debate coach at Parkway South High School in Manchester, MO. She graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC., where all students took a four-year interdisciplinary curriculum focused on Christianity and Culture. Sarah majored in English and earned her Master's Degree at the University of Virginia.

Sarah served as an ordained Deacon and Elder in various leadership positions in two Presbyterian churches (Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA and Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church in Ladue, MO). She retired from Parkway School District after more than 20 years of service where she taught English and served as an Assistant Principal at Parkway South High School.

While at Parkway, Sarah was honored as a Pillar of Parkway for her work with intercultural exchange in 2001. She was a longtime volunteer with AFS-USA Intercultural Exchange Programs for high school students, including hosting 3 year-long exchange students in her home and sending her own children abroad for AFS exchanges. She served as Chair of the National Board of Directors for AFS-USA and was one of thirty individuals receiving the Millenium International Volunteer Award given by the US Department of State in 2000.

Sarah was known for her speaking abilities and collaborative style of leadership. To her family and friends, she was the glue that connected everyone together. She took a keen interest in the lives of others, especially young people. She travelled with groups of children worldwide, to countries including Russia, India, and Japan. She also travelled with each of her grandchildren individually to destinations of their choosing in honor of their 13th birthdays, and maintained active connections with each of them until the day she died. She will be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Sarah Yancey Memorial Fund (https://www.afsusa.org/leadership/sarah-yancey/) to send U.S. students abroad in a continuation of her legacy in intercultural exchanges. Alternatively, donations can be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (https://themmrf.org/) to continue the search for cures for the disease that took her from us too soon.

Almost 15 years ago, Sarah was my roommate during an AFS orientation. As a new volunteer Sarah gave me the overview and best practices. Anytime I needed tips and strategies of working with schools, I would give Sarah a call. She will be surely missed, but her legacy lives in many of us.

Sarah and I were friends practically from infancy. We lost touch when she headed to college. She always held a special spot in my heart.

Amy, Burt and your families,
AFS Missouri Gateway Team,

I am saddened to hear of Sarah's passing. I didn't have the opportunity to work closely with Sarah but had met her a few times over the years at AFS national events. To me she is the epitome of a superstar AFS volunteer. Her heart for cultural exchange and making such a difference in students' lives both from the US and abroad will never be forgotten. She will be missed greatly by all. You are all in my thoughts at this time.

Sarah was an inspiration and a valued voice of wisdom and guidance to all of us on the Sponsored Programs team at AFS-USA. As Chair of the Sponsored Programs Advisory Group, Sarah was an outspoken advocate and champion of our work. I am personally deeply saddened by this news and know that I join so many others across the globe in feeling this tremendous loss. The impact of Sarah´s volunteer work with AFS will endure. Sending so much love to her family and those close to her.
With love and gratitude,
Patti Davis, former Director of Inbound Sponsored Programs, AFS-USA

Sarah had a tremendous impact on so many of us exchange students. She was one of the main coordinators, especially at Parkway South High were she was an assistant principal. It took me a while to connect with her. She's is like a tough cookie on the outside, until you discover the sweet creamy filling.

I was an AFS exchange student (from Austrian) at Parkway South in 2003/04, and stayed with the wonderful Hochstetler-Finan family. (My host parents are visiting me in Belgium at this very moment!)

I am sending an image as well. It's of a Christmas ornament that is sitting in my room, it's a long story why it's sitting there months before Christmas... BUT I held it in my hands a day before I learned of her passing. I find that interesting.

Your won't be forgotten, dear Sarah! I hope you're in a wonderful place now and get to enjoy it to the fullest! Sending lots of love from down here. xxx Lara

I am so sorry to hear this news. Sarah helped my daughter Liz at Parkway South in 2005. She is a big part of why, she is now an Assisant Dean of Admission at a University. She understood Liz's potental when others did not not. Liz said, Mrs Yancey always believed in me !!! The O'Sullivans are sad today! Sincerely Jill O'Sullivan
