Stephen Ray McKane
1975 ~ 2013
Stephen Ray McKane devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and coach was called home to his Heavenly Father on October 8th, 2013 at the age of 38. Steve was born on March 13th, 1975 in Bellflower, California to William Robert McKane and Gwen Lucille Dicus McKane. He played for four seasons at the University of Utah as a Ute where he earned his Bachelor's degree. While at the U of U, Steve met and married Kami and together they have three sons; Parker, Klarke and Grant. Following his playing career, Steve chose the profession of teacher and coach. Steve felt blessed to have coached at Independence High School in Glendale, AZ, been a graduate assistant at BYU (while earning his Masters), a defensive line coach for Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL and finally realizing his lifelong dream as he became the head coach of the Florence High School Gophers. The gospel of Jesus Christ has been his foundation and the Savior's example the guide that he modeled his life after. Stephen loved his boys- the ones at home & the ones on the field and wanted the very best for all of them.

Kami, Bill, Gwen and "the boys"--I have struggled for words these past two and a half weeks to let you know how my heart goes out to you. I have written volumes to you in my mind but no lines are ever adequate to express my love for Stevie and for you. Please just know that you will continue to be in my prayers. I love you.

Brother McKane was dear to our family hearts not only for the inspiration in our ward, but for the hard work and devotion on the football field. My oldest even though he didn't admit it then admired him and learned a lot of good qualities from coach. Our prayers continue yo be with sister McKane and their boys along with the extended family . Truly appreciate and sorry for your loss. SISTER VALLE

Elder McCane and I served a fall season in Lincoln Nebraska. Not only was it a break from the hot humid sun but it was football season!! Elder McCane loved his football. Your son and husband was a spiritual giant. Always ready to take on the day. Always smiling and making the best of any situation. He also could clean out a buffet and others plates like a champion! My thoughts and experience with elder McCane were some of the best I had on my mission. Baptizing and bringing people closer to the savior. My prayers and thanks for spending time with a guy that brought many souls unto Christ and his example taught me life lessons. Sorry for your loss.

I also had the pleasure of serving in the same mission with Elder McKane. He is one of the friendliest, kindest people I know. It will be hard to deal with his passing, but since most of my recollections of Steven are from my mission, I can't help but picture him carrying on that great work in the Spirit World. Please Heavenly Father, comfort his sweet wife and children.

My prayers to Kami, his children, and family. I had the privilege of serving with Elder McKane in Nebraska. He was one of the best, and most enjoyable companions I had. Those times working with him, teaching the gospel, sweating in the Omaha summer heat are precious memories.

There are people in our life's that truly show us the way to, both walk straight and care for others by serving those around them. Steve, indeed was and is one of those men! We are filled with sorrow for all those he loves, by this, all too early departure from this life's journey! But he lives in the hearts of all his family, which he so loves, and within all those who love him! Prayers and may the Father's blessings be with them always!

Stephen certainly carried on the great coaching tradition established by his dad. Bill is one of my favorite coaches in the Mesa area and always made you feel welcome and he did a great job with his team and players in preparing them for lifes challenges, Stephen is a great example of this.
Your friendship has always been deeply appreciated.God bless you all.
