Thomas Hall DeArmond

Thomas Hall DeArmond of Hubbard, Ore., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family Aug. 8, 2021. Born in Oregon City to Tom and Willie DeArmond, Tom graduated from North Marion High School and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Oregon State University, graduating with a degree in Agriculture. In 1966, Tom married Kathy Ellingson and they had three children.
Tom lived most of his life on the farm his family purchased in 1942. In the early years, the family raised grass seed, but in 1972 Tom planted the first acres of turfgrass sod and in 1976, Oregon Turf Farms was born. Tom worked diligently to make the farm a success and was blessed to be surrounded by many devoted, long-term employees who became part of his family.
Tom will be remembered for his humor, wit, and excellent business sense. He was a mentor to many people, encouraging them in their careers and business endeavors. Tom and his companion of the last 29 years, Barbara Russell, enjoyed fishing, traveling, and especially exploring little-known areas in the state of Oregon.
His family was incredibly important to Tom. He is survived by his three children, Lisa DeArmond Wing (Brian Wing), Tom DeArmond, Jr. (Heidi Schmidt), and Brent DeArmond; his eight grandchildren, Katelyn, Ben, Thomas, Isabella, David, Charlotte, Madison and Hannah; his sister, Sally Dorf (John Dorf); nieces, Gail Byrne and Karen Martin; and long-time companion, Barbara Russell.
A party celebrating Tom's life will be held in late September.
