Charles Pryor III Obituary

Charles Sheppard Pryor III "Shep" left us unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, at the age of 80 years old. The only child of Rosa Williams Pryor and Charles Sheppard Pryor II, was born and raised in Buena Vista, Ga., surrounded by a large extended family. He is survived by his loving wife and companion of 50 years Margaret "Peggy" Pryor, his daughter Kate Pryor Qureshi (Ian), his son William Pryor (Ning) and one very special grandchild, Maggie Qureshi. Shep is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point New York, class of 1966. He later received a MBA from Georgia State University. He began his career in New Orleans at Lykes Brothers and then waterman steamship where he worked as a port engineer for many years. He was an active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry. Shep was a member of the Marine Club of New Orleans where he served as president from 1992 to 1993. For many years, he also had the honor of serving (and dressing) as the elf, handing out gifts at the club's annual Christmas party. Shep's great loves in life were his family and his dogs. ln fact, he never met a dog he didn't like. He could be seen most evenings sitting on the front porch with his Labrador Sophie, greeting and handing out treats to neighborhood dogs on their walks. One of his favorite pastimes was taking his children and later his granddaughter to the overlook to watch the ships come down the Mississippi. A memorial service will be held in his honor at his Family home in Buena Vista, Ga. at Thanksgiving, where he will be interred in the Buena Vista cemetery beside generations of family members. ln lieu of flowers, please direct gifts to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1031 South Carrolton Ave., New Orleans, La. 70118.
