Waltraud Schmidt Obituary
Waltraud Schmidt, our beloved mother, grandmother, and wife passed away February 10, 2025 at the age of 88. Our guiding light, source of endless love, and steadfast pillar will forever be in our hearts.
Waltraud was born in Bad Hersfeld, Germany on August 17, 1936. In high school, she was often featured in her town newspaper for achievements in field and track and was selected to train for the Olympics. In her teenage years, she was a talented artist drawing sketches of glamorous women's couture and designing visual merchandise in the windows of local clothing boutiques. At the age of 18, she left her homeland, Germany, to embark on a journey by ship, the Arosa Star, to Saskatchewan, Canada. Her intention was to earn enough to purchase a dream Vespa moped. Her dream turned into a love story when she met her future husband, Wolfgang, at a German dance.
From that day on in 1952, they devoted themselves to creating a life together on Vancouver Island, Canada, and later relocated to Santa Monica, and West Hills. She always supported her husband "Schatz" and assisted him with their typesetting and print shop along with investing in real estate. Soon after, Waltraud and Wolfgang welcomed their daughter, Ramona, and moved to Tarzana. Finally they moved into their forever home in Camarillo so they could be as close as possible to their adorable twin grandsons,Wolfgang and Vincenzo.
A devoted wife, mother, and Oma, Waltraud enjoyed knitting, painting, sailing, and gardening while always at the comfort of having her fur baby dogs by her side when she was able to.
Throughout her life, Waltraud was humble and spoke to everyone in stores as if they were her close friends. She was spunky enough until the end by not beating around the bush. Whenever she had her fill of frustration, she occasionally flipped the bird when it was well deserved! Her vibrant presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community. We will forever miss her smile, daily phone calls, words of wisdom, and her loving motherly support.
Waltraud is survived by her daughter Ramona, and grandsons Vincenzo and Wolfgang.
