"Life After Death" by Laura Gilpin
The things I know: How the living go on living And how the dead go on living with them So that in a forest Even a dead tree casts a shadow And the leaves fall one by one And the branches break in the wind And the bark peels off slowly And the trunk cracks And the rain seeps through the cracks And the trunk falls to the ground And the moss covers it And in the spring the rabbits find it And build their nest Inside the dead tree So that nothing is ever wasted in nature Or in love.

I met Shirley at an Elderhostile in Oregon. She walked into the room with such style and grace, I knew immediately I wanted to be friends with her. Luckily for me she felt the same. We traveled together and eventually started to meet monthly in Denver for lunch. I will treasure those lunches for the rest of my life. She added such wisdom to our endless conversation. Sadly we stopped meeting when her vision began to fail but our meetings and conversations added a forever dimension to my life. I will always miss you my friend!!
