Robert Christopher Gammel of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away from this life after a long illness on August 5, 2022, at the age of 69. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on February 26, 1953, the son of George Walter Gammel and Bonita Mae (Cole) Gammel. He attended Southeast High School in Oklahoma City. He then went to work for Van's Auto Supply, spending 30 years with the company, followed by six years at O'Reilly Auto Parts. He retired from the automotive industry after 36 years of dedicated service.
Robert had a kind, loving, and giving heart and more than anything, enjoyed spending time with those he loved. He was a positive, upbeat person who never met a stranger and whose first concern was always the happiness and wellbeing of others. He adored getting his family together for any occasion, and especially loved family game nights. He was a sweet and loving husband to his beloved wife, Bonita, the love of his life for 50 years. The happy couple owned a timeshare in Branson, Missouri, and Robert loved taking his wife there to see the shows and take in the scenery. His love of sports always went together with the tremendous love he had for his family. He was a wonderful father who enjoyed coaching his late son Christopher's Little League, football, and baseball teams. He dearly loved his nieces and nephews and enjoyed close relationships with his siblings and in-laws, and he loved coaching the family softball team, which was comprised solely of his family members. He simply adored sports, and you could often find him watching a Thunder basketball game, rooting for the OU Sooners during football and softball season, and cheering on the Washington Redskins any time they played.
He loved and believed strongly in his Savior, Jesus Christ, in whose arms he now rests. Robert touched the lives of many with his warm, genuine personality, his selfless nature, and the tremendous love he had for his family and his fellow man. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Christopher Shawn Gammel, two brothers, George and Willy Gammel, three brothers-in-law, Dick Nichols, Leon Cox, and Dennis Hughes, and two nephews, Justin Armstrong, and Brian Potter.
Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife, Bonita Gammel, of the home; one brother, Ronald Gammel and his wife Jamie of Moore, Oklahoma, and three sisters, Margaret Nichols of Oklahoma City, Ada Cox, and Diane Brown, both of Moore; sisters-in-law Sharon Zook and husband Bill, Barbara Douglas and husband Ronnie, Cecilia Hughes, Espe Hughes, and Cheryl Gammel, and brother-in-law Wayne Hughes and his wife, Diana; along with many loving extended family members and dear friends.
The Gammel family would like to extend a special thank you to all of Robert's doctors, nurses, and clergy at Oklahoma Heart Hospital North, all of whom had a very special place in his heart.
