BARNARDSVILLE – Monroe Charles Ballew, age 90, of Barnardsville, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Mission Hospital.
Monroe was born on June 25, 1935, in Buncombe County to the late Henry and Ollie Harwood Ballew. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna Ballew who passed in 2009; and by several siblings.
In the 1950s he went to Detroit to work for US Steel where he worked for 32 years and met his future wife, Anna. He became a Master Mason in the River Rouge Masonic Lodge in Michigan and was very active with the Masons until his retirement. He retired in 1986 to Barnardsville. Monroe, along with his brother Reid, spent years working their land. Monroe liked walking in the woods with his dogs and spending time with his family. He was known as the candy man to the delight of the children at Carson’s Chapel Baptist Church in Barnardsville where he was a member.
Surviving is his daughter, Sue Bradley and husband Mark, of Westerville, Ohio; sister, Joyce Hensley, of Weaverville; brother, Reid Ballew of Barnardsville; grandchild, Cormac Bradley; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with Rev. David Crowder officiating. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park, 40 Roberts St., Weaverville. The family will receive friends Monday, October 13, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
