William Mayer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heil-Schuessler & Sinn Funeral Home in Sparta on Oct. 27, 2025.
William "Doc" Mayer, 85, of Sparta, IL; born on March 24, 1940 in Charleston, SC, the son of William Leon and Genevieve (née, Joiner) Mayer; passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Doc was a machinist at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft while attending Logan College of Chiropractic. He graduated in 1967 and ran his practice in Sparta for 35 years. He was appointed to the Randolph County Sheriff's Merit Board for over 40 years and served as the secretary for some time. He was a long-standing member of the Randolph County Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed overseeing the maintenance of the range for 40 years. He was known by many as Doc Mayer but most of all, he was proud of his role as Grandpa and Dad. In his practice, his patients were always a top priority. He was known for helping anyone, and no patient in need would have ever been turned away. He took pride in his work and was well respected in communities all around. His relationships with patients remained far after retirement, and he spent a lot of time in his office in the years following. He and his family spent many summers at Myrtle Beach and he loved to travel all over the country. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time with nature. He was an avid storyteller, and his family will cherish the tales he shared. His retirement was devoted to spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife – Carolyn (née, Glass) Mayer of Sparta, IL to whom he married on August 26, 1961 in Sparta, IL; three daughters – Christine Mayer of Sparta, IL, Melissa (spouse, Mario) Jones of Sparta, IL, and Becky (spouse, Don) Ohms of Sparta, IL; three grandchildren – Isabella Jones, William Jones, and Leo Ohms; one sister – Patricia (spouse, Dennis) Dintelman of Coulterville, IL; sisters-in-law – Marlyn Black and Shirley Reimer; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; brother – James Mayer; sister – Jacquelyn "Jackie" Cook.
