Age 72 of Channahon, Illinois died Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, Illinois.
Born April 10, 1953 in Morris, Illinois, Willard Laverne, affectionately known as "Red", was the son of Melvin and Mary (Lampman) Mikkelson. He was raised and educated in Morris and graduated from Morris Community High School with the Class of 1971. Red was a member of the Laborer' Union Local 75 for many years, and he worked for both Caterpillar in Joliet and for Diamond Construction before retiring at the age of 50.
He was an enthusiast of garage sales and auctions, always on the hunt for that next great find. Red was particularly fond of antiques and collecting coins. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and was always up for a good Western show or movie. He was a truly genuine person who took the time to really get to know a person. Red was the type of man that was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need and was generous with his time.
Survivors include his three nephews: Robert (Lisa) Rhodes of South Bend, Indiana, James (Debra) Rhodes of Braidwood, and Jason (Dedra) Rhodes of Gardner; as well as several great nieces and nephews and many dear friends he made over the years.
Red was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mildred Rhodes.
Per his wishes, cremation rites are being accorded and a celebration of life is being planned for a later date.
