John Robinson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Travis Funeral Home, LLC on Mar. 3, 2026.
John Henry Robinson Sr. was born November 28, 1934, in Chauncy, Georgia to Rev. Butch and Corine Robinson. John was one of 13 children born to this union. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Samuel, Eddie, Joseph, Willie B., Henry, and Simeon; sisters: Martha Garret, Doshie Dupree, Idella Hughes, and Annabell Howard.

John H. met the love of his life in Dorothy V. Gordon while on a trip to Miami. They were united in holy matrimony on December 25, 1955. Dorothy and John H. were blessed with a daughter named Earlette in 1956. They also were blessed with a son, John H. Robinson, Jr. Several years later in 1959, they relocated to Chicago and began a new life in the North.

John H. was a crane operator and truck driver. He worked long and hard hours to provide for his family. John H. loved playing Bid Whiz and going to the Casino. He was affectionately called John H., Breaktime and Mr. Robinson. For over 30 years he was a member of Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago under the leadership of Bishop Larry Trotter. He was devoted to his church family as he served as a trustee and deacon. For over 50 years he was a faithful member of Wisdom Lodge #102 F&AM PH 9. He attended

He loved to cook. It was rarely a weekend that passed that he did not have a big pot of fish grease going dropping pieces of catfish for the masses. He loved to cook barbecue. He owned that big grill barrel that held several slabs of ribs, chicken wings and legs. He would slather the sauce on the meat when done, and it was more than finger lickin' good. At the block parties he made sure that it was plenty of food. John H. cared about his community, and he made sure that people had enough to eat. It was not unusual for him to give away food to those in need.

John H. departed this life on February 25, 2026, after a short illness.

John leaves to cherish his loving memories: his daughter, Earlette; his son, John H. Robinson, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren: Terrance, Robert, Derrick and Danquole; seven great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; Sisters-in-law: Annie Lewis, Carolyn Smith, and Betty Coulter; Brothers-in-law: Harold Gordon and David Gordon; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. His sense of humor and energy will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
