James Coleman Obituary

James Emory Coleman, III, (Jim) passed away on October 18, 2025, at home, surrounded by those he loved dearly. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cecelia (Cely) Smith Coleman; their son James (Jay) E. Coleman, IV, and his wife, Stacy; their daughter Brooke Coleman Wick, and her husband, Cameron; and their grandchildren Coleman, Ellie, and Jack Wick. He is also survived by his sisters Catherine Hicks and Ann Hiner. He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Jim Coleman, and his brothers-in-law, Lloyd Hicks and Jimmy Hiner.

Jim was born in Roanoke, VA, but resided in Richmond from an early age. He attended Hermitage High School before enrolling at VA Tech, where he was a member of the "Highty-Tighties" band. He completed his BS degree at VCU. Jim was employed as a Right of Way Manager at VDOT for 40 years. After retirement, Jim and Cely spent much of their time at their river home in Edenton, NC, where he enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the Chowan River.

Jim was a family man through and through. Nothing pleased him more than the time he spent with each and every member of his family. He enjoyed every minute of the many hours of boating and waterskiing with his family, restoring his beloved Triumphs with Jay, and watching Brooke bless us with our grandchildren. His presence will be deeply missed by all.

An outdoor Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at The Historic Polegreen Church, 6411 Heatherwood Drive, Mechanicsville, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Good Doctors Foundation (www.gooddoctorsfoundation.org), Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (www.masseycancercenter.org), or the charity of your choice.
