George Steinberg, friend, colleague, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and loving husband, passed away on November 1st at the age of 100, a milestone which was recently celebrated by so many that knew him. He was a passionate man which he expressed in many ways during his incredible journey – whether through music, travel, stories and jokes or just a touch from those always strong hands. He was especially passionate about his loving wife of 74 years, Myrt, who he missed deeply.
During his time with us, he lived many lives, all full. He proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of the USO. He attended Central High School in Philadelphia, where his scholastic accomplishments resulted in a bachelor's degree. He was known for his musical ability – concentrating mostly on his saxophone. His playing continued as he worked with many bands including several of the Big Bands of the time; even producing a record – "Goofin with the Ghost" by the Stones.
He and Myrt had a love of travel, from Alaska to Europe and they even went on multiple trips with the Chinese government and Fred Waring to promote musical cooperation between the United States and China. Always thinking of their family back home, they saved room in their luggage for souvenirs for the children and grandchildren.
George will be missed by his daughter Alyn and son Steven (Linda). His son Kevin was tragically lost in an accident in 1978, while being honored for his fund-raising efforts for the Penn State dance marathon called Thon. This event led George and Myrt and friends to bring the Compassionate Friends organization to the Philadelphia area. In 1980, the couple appeared on television and radio programs promoting the organization.
In addition to his children, he leaves behind his grandchildren-Elexis (Kevin), Jordan (Jess), Jason (Patty), Kira (Len), Cassie, Ian (Megan), and Sara (Steve), who will all miss him greatly. He was excited to see his great-grandchildren Emma, Oliver, Addie, Dylan, Talula and Bryson added to the family. As we celebrated his 100th birthday, he was able to see so many of the people who his life had touched – from every generation and all over the world. Everyone who knew him, knew his quirks. He will be remembered for going to any restaurant and asking to be seated near the orchestra or the song the grandchildren created about his dislike of dairy. He is finally at rest back with Myrt.
Contributions can be sent in his memory to The Kevin A. Steinberg scholarship fund at Penn State.
