David Berkowitz Obituary

Of Forest Hills, age 74, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 after a brave battle with Parkinson's disease. Beloved husband of 50 years of Diane Schleyer Berkowitz. He was born in Philadelphia in 1947 to Jerome and Eva (Markowitz) Berkowitz, along with his brother, the late Irving "Skeeter" Berkowitz. David received a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (1969), and a Master of Science in Microbiology/Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (1975). He was an infectious disease control coordinator for the Center of Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety. He was also an adjunct instructor in the program of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and microbiology at Penn State. He volunteered as an EMT/paramedic with Forest Hills Rescue 8 and Forest Hills Auxiliary Police. He was a Mason and member of Corinthian Lodge No. 573 F.&A.M., and served as the Worshipful Master in 2004. David was also an avid backyard birdwatcher and a dog lover who owned several pugs over the years including Casey, Paulie, and Saebian.
Friends received at Wolfe Memorial, LLC, Forest Hills Chapel, 3604 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Sunday, February 6, from 1:00 to 4:00pm, with Masonic services held at 4:00pm followed by a memorial service where friends are invited to share remembrances. Masks are required for all guests inside the funeral home.
