He served in the US Navy on the USS Essex CVS-9 from 1964-1969 and then taught at Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI for two years.

Bill went on to work with Dewey Square Investors, a money management firm owned by United Asset Management, before becoming self-employed in 2000

He spent his summers at Eastman and Sutton, NH and lived in Rumford, RI from 1968-2002 when he moved to New London, NH.

While in Providence, he was President of the Greater Providence YMCA and was a longtime member of the Hope Club and the Agawam Hunt Club. He was particularly proud of his 14 years as chair of Hallworth House, a 57-bed nursing home owned by the Episcopal Diocese of RI.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sybil G. "Wendy" Sloan of Peterborough, NH; his daughter Susan Alsfeld and her husband Richard of Saunderstown, RI; and his son William M.
