Professor Frank Moriarty (aka "Mort") was not only the most influential teacher I´ve ever studied under, but one of the most consequential people I´ve ever known in my life. To sit in one of his classes at Franklin Pierce College was both a challenge and a privilege. His complete domination of the subject matter (Latin American History, European History, Political Ideologies, et al), was surpassed only by his wit and his masterful delivery. One would always look forward to his class with a mix of trepidation and excitement, as there was no doubt that you were about to hear a world-class lecture, while also being challenged to think, to analyze, to evaluate and ultimately, to grow in knowledge.
Without his influence I would never have learned Spanish, transferred to American University, traveled through Central and South America or pursued a master´s degree. His friendly counsel and superlative writing - preserved in a few letters - are possessions I will always cherish.
I lost touch with Professor Moriarty over the years, a mistake I will always regret. But I cannot reflect on my formative college days and the wonderful friendships and associations I made at that time, without his image appearing in my mind - standing head and shoulders above his peers - and representing the absolute best a college education has to offer. For that, I say; Thank you Professor!
Que descanse en paz Mort, mi estimado prefesor.
Tu amigo,
Cliff Johnston
