Susan (Sue) Patricia Kay, loving wife, mother and sister, passed away at age 72 on July 10, 2022. Sue was born November 22, 1949, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, to Maurice John DeMers and Helen Patricia Barnaby. She grew up in Massachusetts and New York and later moved to California with her father, settling in Woodland. After graduation from Woodland High School, she married Steven Fisher, and they had a son, Matthew, and a daughter Katherine. Sue continued her education at Sacramento City College, School of Nursing, graduating in1982. She loved singing and performing, including high school musicals, dramas, and folk singing. She and her husband also performed at a number of weddings, bringing added enjoyment to the newly wedded couples.
Sue's nursing career began at Woodland Memorial Hospital and Silas B. Hayes Hospital. On moving to the Monterey Bay Area, her career continued for many years at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP). Sue especially enjoyed her 16 years of work in the ICU at CHOMP, where she could provide her loving care and support to both the patients and their families - a defining characteristic of Sue, unselfish love and care for others. Many of her dearest friends were her associates in the ICU. Upon retiring from CHOMP, Sue became the Office Manager for Cardio-Pulmonary Associates and retired from that position in 2006.
As a gifted seamstress, she designed and hand-sewed intricate costumes, clothing and quilts for family and friends. Her renowned holiday English Toffee was coveted and anticipated all year long. She walked countless steps on local beaches with her beloved dogs and enjoyed attending the annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Sue loved celebrating the holidays and was masterful at decorating and cooking for every special occasion. Days spent with her family kept the light sparkling in her eyes.
Sue married Jack L. Kay in 2005, and they spent 17 glorious years as "girlfriend and boyfriend." Sue developed a great love of travel, and she and Jack especially enjoyed cruise travel. They visited Australia, New Zealand, South America, several countries in South Asia, and throughout Europe. Sue especially loved planning trips for her extended family, another example of her giving spirit. Her spirit of adventure was shown in her love of hot air balloon rides over the Napa Valley.
Sue is survived by her husband Jack, her children Matthew and Katherine Fisher, stepson David Kay (Barbara), four grandchildren, Noah, Simon and Abby Fisher, and Jonathan Kay, and her beloved sister Phebe Ogami. A private Celebration of Life will be held to honor her memory. The family requests any memorial contributions be made to SPCA of Monterey County and Monterey County Food Bank.
