David Cunningham Obituary

David Cunningham
1950 - 2023
Groton, CT
David Cunningham, 73 of Noank, CT passed away at home Tuesday December 26, 2023. Dave was born in Tucson, AZ son of the late William and Bette Cunningham. Dave was raised in the Springfield and Hampden area, moving to Syracuse and ultimately settling in Noank. Obtaining a Master's Degree from Syracuse University, Dave worked in various research positions before joining Pfizer, working at the Research Site until his retirement. David had an incredible mind, always questioning, always seeking answers. Even as a young boy David sought answers from the world around him gathering whatever piqued his interest and examining under his microscope. When not working with his microscope, he was performing experiments with his chemistry set. He continued this inquisitiveness throughout his life. He was a voracious reader and could converse intelligently on a very wide variety of topics. Dave enjoyed nature and went on many nature walks alone or with friends enjoying the animals, birds and scenery along the trails. Dave enjoyed the ocean whether out on the ocean boating with friends, walking along the beaches, doing a little fishing or just enjoying the ocean views. It was all good. He also enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. Dave was very passionate about his interests and enjoyed talking about whatever he was working on; from flowers to complex medical subjects, the conversation was never dull. His knowledge of medicine was invaluable to the family, helping us to understand what illnesses we may have been going through and how to help ourselves live a healthy life. Dave will be truly missed by family and friends. David leaves behind his siblings, Richard Cunningham and his wife Paula of Belchertown, William Cunningham and his wife Lynn of East Longmeadow, Paul Cunningham and his wife Sue of East Longmeadow, and Bette Kilduff of St. Petersburg, FL. He also leaves behind cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Linda Gillespie and Tom Longo who were kind and compassionate friends to Dave. Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral home service on Saturday, January 13th at 11:00 AM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home & Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen St., in Springfield. Burial will be private. For more information, please visit us at www.byronkeenan.com

Dave was my highly valued and respected colleague at Pfizer for many years. He brought advanced, specialized and continually evolving skills to the effort to discover new medicines, and was an important and well-liked contributor to a high-performing team. His work is done, and has not been in vain: may he rest in peace.

I used to pass and say hello to Dave while hiking in Haley Farm State Park here in Noank. He was quite a hiker. A good neighbor. A loss.

I wish to express my condolences to all of Dave´s family. I have been fortunate to know Dave for about the last 5 years. He and I served as the crew on weekly lunch cruises with Bob Leuba and Patrick Hourihan on Bob´s boat. Conversations with Dave were always interesting and at times quite humorous. I am saddened at his passing
