Joan Culbertson Obituary
Joan was born on May 24, 1929 to her parents, Joseph and Anna Knittel in South Dakota. She was the second youngest of nine Knittel siblings. The family relocated to Lodi, California in 1934 where she spent the rest of her days.
She graduated from Lodi High School in 1947 and began a career as a bookkeeper working at the Lodi News Sentinel and Sell Rite Market before retiring in the early 90's to be a full time grandma.
Joan was a long time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Galt where she devoted her time and wore many hats over the years. In her later years, she volunteered many weekends working at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, a cause near and dear to her as a cancer survivor.
She was an avid reader, loved watching a good concert or theater performance, and spent many days finding a bargain at the local thrift shops. She loved to bake cookies with and for her grandkids, enjoyed her evening glass of wine and loved to travel. Many fond memories were made in Calistoga for the sprint car races and traveling around the country in the RV. Above all else she cherished the many loved ones that a large family brought her and enjoyed every minute spent gathering with them.
She is survived by her son, John Freeman (Sherise), her five grandchildren, Kristen Waller (Chris), Carrie Mujica (Jose), Cody Bloom, Carly Wilson, and Collin Wilson, seven great grandchildren, her sister Margaret Moore and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Wilson, and her husband Leon "Cub" Culbertson.
Joan will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. As she always reminded us, if you don't have love - you don't have anything. We are grateful to have been loved by her.
A private graveside service to honor Joan's life will be held on October 17, 2023. If you wish to donate in her memory, please consider St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Galt.
