Ernest Steinhilber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2022.
Ernest John Steinhilber III (Jack), 91, passed away in the presence of family on June 16th. A retired Psychiatrist, Jack's first job as a paper boy led to his lifelong enjoyment of reading the daily newspaper.

He was preceded in death by his parents,
Ernest John Steinhilber Jr. and Marjorie Tucker Steinhilber and brothers Robert and William, whom both passed away at young ages.

Jack was born on March 13, 1931 in Ilion, NY and grew up in Frankfort, NY, graduating high school there before heading to The Hotchkiss School for a post graduate year. At Hamilton College, he joined the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and graduated in 1953. He was the first student accepted to the New York Medical College class of 1957 after charming the admissions people during his interview.

As an Army Physician, Jack spent 1962-1964 as a Captain in Fort Eustis, Newport News, Va. He built and maintained a private psychiatric practice in Concord, MA where he was also affiliated with Emerson hospital. Prior to that he worked at Valleyhead hospital in Carlisle, MA and for many years consulted with Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lawrence, MA and the Lowell District Court.

Jack married Elizabeth J. Sharpe (Betty) in 1966 after they met while both working at Boston State hospital. They raised four children and enjoyed having numerous pets during the years in Concord. Jack's children have many fond memories of growing up in Concord. For the Bicentennial In 1976, Jack rented a canoe painted with the American flag and paddled down the Concord river to the Old North bridge, an image that was captured in several local newspapers. While he may have preferred something more exotic, family camping trips with long car rides were the reality, and those cherished memories live on.

After living in Massachusetts for 33 years, Jack and Betty moved to beautiful St. Simons Island, Ga (SSI). He continued working as a Locum Tenens psychiatrist across the U.S. until 2008. This work enabled him to embrace his love of travel, exploring and meeting new people. He especially loved working in Alaska and Maine as well as the Southwest. Betty was able to join him for many of these assignments and they enjoyed new experiences, finding restaurants and trying local cuisines together. Memorable adventures include driving through the scenic paradise on the dirt and gravel roads from Denali National Park to Fairbanks, Alaska, and going to the Opera in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

While living on St. Simons, Jack volunteered at St. Vincent dePaul Society as well as at the International Seamen's House where he welcomed crew to the area and took them shopping, touring and for medical care.

A devout Catholic, Jack was active at St. Williams Catholic Church and, much to the delight of his grandchildren, even resumed "altar boy" duties in his late 70's. The area helped rekindle his love of golf, which he played often but without as much success as he would have liked. He often reminded his family of his days as a caddy in Lake Placid, NY during college summers. He became a Grandfather in 1994 and has been known as Papa Jack and then "PJ" for the past 28 years.

Jack's large family loved visiting SSI and there are many happy memories of walking the beaches, eating out, catching up and celebrating holidays. They will miss hearing him whistle, his colorful wardrobe, and animated stories.

His memory will forever be cherished by his wife, Elizabeth Jean Steinhilber-Roswell, GA; E. John IV (Tuesday Rodriquez & children E. John V and Jacob) Steinhilber-Miami, FL; Kathryn E. (Kate) (Matt & children Zachary and Cole) Lunger-Roswell, GA; Torr Edwards Steinhilber-Harpswell, ME; and Ret. Col. Christopher Tobin (Gabriela Hernandez & daughter Sierra) Steinhilber-Vero Beach, FL.

Funeral service will be held at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia on Friday July 22, 2022 at 10:30am. It will also be live streamed on the church website for those who cannot attend.

Memorial contributions may be made to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, a Catholic mission society - Maryknollsociety.com or Partners in Health, a Boston based International non-profit public health organization, www.pih.org.
