Frederick Brock Obituary

July 28, 1943 - April 8, 2022 Frederick (Ted) Brock died of a heart attack while taking an afternoon nap on April 8, 2022. He'd had an enjoyable day watching the Masters Golf Tournament, one of his favorite pastimes. He leaves behind daughter Molly Brock, son Bill Brock, wife Connie Turner, siblings Charlie, Jim, Betsy and Tom. Ted first tried his hand at sports writing at the age of eight by listening to games on the radio. He became a freelance sportswriter, wrote for the Modesto Bee, the NFL, MLB, covered Olympic games, and taught sports writing at USC. He also taught at Ignacio Valley and San Gabriel High Schools. As a child he treasured summers in Inverness. He graduated from Miramonte High School, Occidental College, and finished the New York and Boston marathons. He loved jazz, played harmonica, and in his retirement he worked at Altadena Golf Course. Ted could quote dates of historic importance, and was known for asking, "What are you reading
" If you weren't happy with it, he would get you a book he thought you would like. Donations in his name can be made to Ukraine: Doctors Without Borders, coreresponse.org, or your choice.

Ted Brock was my head coach for San Gabriel High School for four years. He molded me into one of the great runners in the team because he believed in me. He allowed me to inspire the team though I wasn´t the fastest member. Coach Brock made me into a leader and gave the tools to teach the team. I am thankful for the man he was in my life. What he gave me can never be replaced by any other man. He was true mentor in my eyes. Thank you for coach for making me the man that I am today. If you were alive now, I would make sure my children would get to know you.

With much love,
Quentin Grzyb

Hey Mr. Brock! It's Jestin. This will be my last email in our exchange.

It's been a little over 3 years since we last met in Pasadena over lunch. Life kind of recovered after the pandemic and picked back up, so I've been in Northern California since early 2022. Life has a way of continuing to move forward, and not to mention communication is tough when you said you were physically unable to muster more than a simple email. I never followed through on the idea of reaching back out to you. And it seems like I will never be able to see you again in this world.

I just had this bad feeling. I got deja vu - did I already see your obituary and decided to keep my condolences to myself? Regardless, I have this email correspondence with you and felt I needed to send you this. I could write a long essay about what you have done for me and many others. You have left an indelible and positive impact on so many people's lives. Thank you for everything you did as a teacher, mentor, coach, friend, and human being. You truly are amazing.

With my utmost respect,
Jestin

My name is Quentin Grzyb and I met him in my freshman year in San Gabriel High School. I had just joined track and field and had little knowledge of what it would entail. In the next three years, I became one of the best cross country runners in the team and was offered the role model role of showing everyone what it means to be dedicated and push my team to achieve new heights of course that was for cross country only. Ted Brock showed me what it means to be a leader and how important my role was in the team. He was one of my lifetime mentors. Rest in peace Coach Brock. Once a runner always a runner.

I was only a sophomore when I met Coach Brock upon joining his Cross-Country team. I still remember my times with him very clearly-
I recall the moments where he'd run from one side of a course all the way to the other just to cheer both me and my teammates on, the times where he'd remind us how to fix our form, to keep pushing ourselves like the mountain goats we are up Mt. Sac, and the way he still remembered my name as he was casting over a Track and Field meet 2 years after he had retired as the coach. His speeches before and after every meet were beyond inspiring and uplifting. These moments all remain very precious to me a decade after.
Overall, Coach Brock had contributed so much towards my never giving up ethics, my confidence, and my drive to continue pressing forward no matter the challenges that wait me in my path. If coach were still here, I would have loved to share with him that he was one of my inspirations for completing the LA marathon a few years back!!

Coach Brock! Changed my life. I was his student. I hope he knows the impact he made on my life and many others. He got me to slowly believe in myself. I know he will always cheer for us runners on even if we can see him physically. To his family, Brock was a well respected and adored man. He retired the year his team was on top. Going out on top. I never started out wanting to run. He knew. I did slowly like it and life is like a race even if I cannot see the finish line. I go on my own pace.

Sad to hear the news of Ted Brock's passing! Ted was my sports writing teacher at USC back in the late 1980's. And we became friends soon after. Ted was a great guy and he will be missed! R.I.P. Ted!!

Ted and I were fraternity brothers at Oxy, and I always enjoyed his quick wit and easy manner. I trust and hope his children are as cool as he was. A great loss.
