Benjamin Chavis Obituary

HUDSON - Mr. Benjamin Jacob Chavis, 19, of Marigold Lane, Hudson, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007. He was born May 25, 1988, in Catawba County to Jerry Chavis and Patsy Cook Chavis of Hudson. Mr. Chavis was a member of Poovey's Chapel Baptist Church. He was involved in sports and participated in the ROTC at South Caldwell High School. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Luther Cook and Benjamin and Dorothy Morgan Chavis; an aunt, Linda Canaday; and two cousins, James Kirby and Justin Kirby. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Valorie Martinez Chavis of Hudson; two brothers, Jeremy Chavis and wife, Shirley, of Palmetto, Fla., and Jonathan Chavis of Hudson; his sister, Kristy Chavis Little of Conover; his grandmother, Marie Branch Cook of Granite Falls; two nieces, Elayna Chavis and Makayla Fox; a nephew, Anthony Little; six aunts, Vivian Chapman and Lisa Cook, both of Granite Falls, Robin Kirby and husband, Jerry, of Lenoir, Brenda Locklear of Rennert, Diana Melvin of Raleigh and Martha Jacobs of Hope Mills; an uncle, Earl Chapman of Granite Falls; three cousins, Marcus Kirby, Jenna Chapman and Anna-Cook Bennett; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Antonio and Joy Martinez of Granite Falls; a sister-in-law, Alicia Martinez of Granite Falls; many friends; and other family members. The memorial service for Mr. Chavis will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Mackie-High Chapel, with the Revs. Nicky Waters and Lou Harlow officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Mackie-High Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 222 S. Church St., Suite 336M, Charlotte, N.C. 28202 or American Heart Association, Memorial and Tribute Processing Center, P.O. 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.
