Carol Varney Obituary


CAROL SUE VARNEY, 88 of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at Huntington Health and Rehab in Huntington, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2023, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Fred Ferguson. Burial will follow in Community Memorial Gardens, Wayne, W.Va. She was born January 8, 1935, in Kiahsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Doliver and Cuba Tomblin Queen. Her husband, Zollie Varney, also preceded her in death along with a daughter, Glenna Kay McSweeney; three brothers, Phillip Queen, Dennis Queen, and Albert Queen; three sisters, Mae Chaffin, Orie Boyd, and Violet Pasley; sisters-in-law Phyllis Queen and Joanne Queen; and a brother-in-law, John Ponsetti. Carol was a member of the Wayne Church of God and was a homemaker. She was the matriarch of her family and enjoyed several hobbies. She loved cooking and baking cakes for her family, flea market shopping, crochet, and quilting with her daughter Glenna, as well as playing rummy and dominos, the beach and working in her flowers. Survivors include two sons, Rodney Varney (Cyndi) of Birmingham, Ala., Rex Varney (Monica) of Wayne, W.Va.; a son-in-law, Raleigh Jarrell McSweeney; ten grandchildren, James Varney, Phillip Varney, Melissa Frazier, Sarah Varney, Timothy McSweeney, Tara Shoemaker, Trenton Varney, Leigha Washington, Whitney Varney, Ariell Phillips; sixteen great-grandchildren; her companion, Harrison Newsome; two special friends, James and Angie Crockett; and a host of additional family and friends. Visitation will be from noon until service time at Morris Funeral Home, Wayne, W.Va.
