William Macaulay Obituary

Dr. William "Bill" P. Macaulay, 88, passed away on February 13, with his devoted wife Inge by his bedside. Born in Teaneck, NJ to Dr. F.A. Macaulay and Florence Macaulay in 1934, Bill was proudly of Scottish and German descent. After attending Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, he attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and received further medical training at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Drafted into the U.S. Army under the Berry Plan, Bill was sent to Heidelberg, Germany to work in the Army Hospital as a general surgeon. He loved working at the hospital, and performed over 1000 cases during his three years in Heidelberg. For his commitment to his work and dedication to his patients, Dr. Macaulay was recognized by the Army with an award for his services. While stationed in Germany, Bill met and married his wife Ingeborg in 1966. The Macaulays moved to the U.S. in the late 1960's, and Bill started his practice as a general surgeon. Dedicated to his patients, community, and mentoring the next generation of practitioners, Bill loved being a physician. Bill trained young surgeons at Hartford Hospital. After retiring from practice, Bill continued teaching at the University of Connecticut. Bill was a happy man who loved life, the arts - ballet, opera, and theater, and enjoyed the company of family and friends. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor and truly lived life by his favorite Latin quote: Carpe Diem - Seize the Day! Thanks to Dr. Robert Dicks, Bill's personal physician from Hartford Hospital, for the wonderful care, and to the dedicated nurses and nursing aids at Brookdale-Chatfield who work so hard for their patients, with a special thanks to Avis Spencer who took excellent care of Bill.

It is hard to believe it's been 3 years since Bill's death. None of my recollections about this wonderful physician, surgeon, and person have faded at all and I don't believe they ever will. Although innumerable other memories are gone. I had a wonderful brief reunion with Inge recently at Hartford Hospital. Rest in peace my friend and look out for all of us from up there. tcbmd

Dr. Macaulay saved my life 25 years ago now, due to his surgical expertise and for being the wonderful Doctor that he was. I have often thought of him fondly through the years for these reasons — always being grateful for my successful recovery while under his care. My condolences to his family, and to all who had the privilege to know him as a friend and in doing so, benefited from his knowledge.

So very sorry to hear of Dr. Macaulay´s passing. He often becomes a part our family history when my mom recounts the countless surgeries she had with Dr. Macaulay at the helm. He actually performed procedures on my dad, mom (so many), my brother, and even me.

What my mom recalls the most was his humor, care, and how he made her feel calm when she most needed it. I remember he had me laughing when he helped me too.

Hugs of strength and love to those closest to him.

Thanks for helping the Luzio´s lead healthier lives Dr. Macaulay. You will always be remembered when Gracie shares her medical history with anyone who will listen.

Bill, rest in peace. I know you are in Heaven. During my four years of residency 1974 to 1978 at Hartford Hospital. There was no better mentor. And that's a lot to say because there were so many wonderful surgeons in that era. He was kind and supportive and encouraging to every one of us. We learned so much. He continued to be an inspiration as we practice together in the same department until his retirement at age 70. He was active skilled and tireless to the last day. I have mimicked his skill with patients and staff every day. There were innumerable wonderful memories at Hartford Hospital and many of the Trends in medicine and surgery ski trips. He and Inga have a big place in my heart.

Willie was amazing, very generous, funny and intelligent. My family spent a lot of time together with him and his wife, Ingeborg, at the Hartford Club and over the holidays. We would always play Who Wants to be a Millionaire, he was the best at it! I am so fortunate to have known him and his loving devoted wife over many years. He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. Love you, Willie.

Dr. Macaulay has touched so many lives including mine for the good. I’m grateful I had the chance to know him and work with him for so many years. He was a friend, a father figure, and great mentor. His love for life, care and dedication for his patients, his great sense of humor, and his passion for his work and teaching the younger generation are only few of qualities that separated him from most. He will be missed tremendously.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I can only imagine the many doctors who, as residents, were lucky enough to be mentored by Dr. Macaulay, but they weren't the only ones who benefitted from his expertise, patience, and sense of humor. As first a surgical tech and then an OR nurse at Hartford Hospital many (too many) years ago, it was always with great relief to be assigned to his room. He had a knack for bringing everyone's anxiety level down and creating an atmosphere where learning and even a few laughs easily took place. He never badgered, demeaned, or humiliated. Instead, he let you find your way and taught by example. Some personalities appeal to limited types of people but not to others. Dr. Macaulay was universal. Everybody loved him...everybody. My experiences were so long ago, but just now learning of his passing makes me feel sad, as if just last week I did a hernia repair with him but now he's gone. To his wife, Inge, and his family and many friends, you have my heartfelt condolences.

Bill was an amazing surgeon and mentor. He was best at training senior level residents because he always let you do the case. We were all pretty self confident at that point, but it was because Bill kept us out of trouble in his unassuming way. Kind, humble and dedicated to the care of his patients. As surgeons we hold very dear to our hearts those that took the extra time to train the next generation. Bill will be missed but the education and training he imparted to his residents will live on for generations.

I had the pleasure of having the good doc take care of some minor surgery back in the day. I was young and inexperienced in matter’s of medical care. His sense of humor combined with mine made an uncomfortable situation funny and pleasant. I would see him a few more times , help your Doctor he would say❤thank you so much for him, blessings to the family at this time of sorrow.
