Clarence Mathews Obituary

Clarence "Mat" Hugh Mathews
March 23, 1944 - November 27, 2024
Mat passed away peacefully at home with family and a few friends present. He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Elizabeth Mathews; two sisters; baby daughter, Petra; and son Michael Mathews. Mat leaves behind wife, Karin; and son Carl Mathews.
Mat was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, and grew up in Tacoma, Washington. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 and served more than 20 years before retiring. Mat's service included 13 years at EUCOM, Germany/Pentagon, a tour in Vietnam and the last five years at the Pentagon, Washington.
Mat's retirement was full of adventure, travels and happy times with wife Karin, visiting family and friends. Many trips across the USA, Canada and Mexico in an RV. Also many, many cruises and military Space-A flights to U.S. bases abroad - and then renting a car for exploring that country. Mat and Karin moved to Green Valley from Bahía Kino, Mexico in 2024. A great move.
Mat was a fighter, but after heavy treatment against cancer for more than three years, his body gave up. He is at peace at last. A funeral will be held at Fort Huachuca, Arizona with full military honors on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. for family and close friends.
