Teddy Bruce Monk, 84, of Fuquay-Varina, passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson's. He was born in Castlewood, Virginia, to the late Bruce and Meada Monk, on Nov. 9, 1939. Ted was preceded in death by his son, Brian Monk; and his sister, Bette McCroskey. He was 18 years old when he met and married Melanie Overbay. She was the love of his life, and they had three children together; Kim, Brian, and Sharon. They were married for 65 wonderful and blessed years. The Monks lived in many towns, and settled in Elkin, East Bend and eventually Winston Salem. Ted joined The Salem company, a manufacturer of ladies' apparel. After eleven years there, Ted started his own apparel company in Elkin (Elkin Valley Apparel "EVA"). After retiring, he formed Forsyth Development, building and developing residential property in Winston-Salem. He was a faithful member of his church, serving as usher, trustee, and on various committees. Ted was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed a good joke and was quick to laugh. In retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Melanie, and they visited everywhere from France to the Galapagos. He never missed an opportunity to be present for holidays, birthdays, and special events, both big and small. As a grandfather, he would drive four hours round trip to see a ballet recital or volleyball game. His family never doubted his love for them. He passed down his love for poetry to his granddaughters and was quick to share a story of how his grandmother had taught him the 91st Psalm. She had encouraged him to memorize this passage to help him not be afraid, whether it was a thunderstorm or an upcoming baseball game. He passed this loving encouragement on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ted is survived by his wife, Melanie; and their two daughters, Kim Poindexter Brown (David) of Fuquay-Varina, and Sharon Monk of Winston-Salem; his granddaughters, Lauren Peavy (James) of La Romana, Dominican Republic, Sarah Vancil (Taylor) of Richmond, Virginia, Sheena Hathcock (Jeffrey) of Albemarle, Brianna Houston (Aaron) of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Mikayla Monk of Lexington, Kentucky; and his great-grandchildren, Michael, Caroline, Katherine, and Charlotte Peavy, Selah and Wesley Vancil, and Jayden Hathcock. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Arosa for the love and care they gave to Mr. Monk during these past months. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18, at Prospect United Methodist Church, 3541 Smithtown Road, East Bend, NC, a graveside service immediately followed. The family received visitors one hour prior to the service.
