John was a much more complex man than he appeared on the surface. He always presented such a calm, wise, fair persona; he even smoked an occasional pipe, and he spoke French, what could be cooler than that? He would've been the mayor of Hobbiton, The Shire (Lord of the Rings). But if there was a strong stance or hard leadership needed, he stepped up to that, too. Never underestimate a Hobbit, even if he speaks French. Memories endure of this good man, as do gratitude and respect. Carpe diem, Ronnie

In my 6 years teaching at DCDS, John was one of the most intelligent and decent people I knew. And oh, that dry, unexpected wit. A great presence for all who knew him, and a proportionally great loss.
Condolences to all the family from a huge admirer of John's grace and goodness.
Carpe diem,
Ronnie

Yes, a warmly regarded and loved 'good man'.
He was open to new experiences and learning from others (He had to be since he was partnered with Shanna). He was easy going and laughed often, in response to his children's repartee. He had a kind heart and demonstrated, quietly, how to do the right thing - be a loyal, compassionate son, husband and father.

A dedicated educator, and very good man. When I recall my years at Country Day, I always remember Mr. Gilbert fondly. My deepest sympathies to Pete, and the rest of the Gilbert family.

Definitely one of my favorite teachers from DCD. Handled the unenviable task of Director of Upper School with aplomb, deftly balancing the often conflicting interests of teachers, students and administration. He was a beacon in a richly staffed educational community. I will miss him and offer my best wishes to his family.

As I write this, I remember the many fine qualities and talents of this exceptional gentleman. When he was my French teacher for 4 years, he set the highest of standards. He was one of the people who inspired me to become a teacher. Many years later, when we were colleagues, it was hard to call him "John" at first because I continued to have him on a very special pedestal. He remained a mentor throughout my time with him at CD. In this time of sadness for his family, I send my condolences and hopes that the best memories of John will help to fill the void. I will always hold him in highest regard; we were fortunate to share some of life's journey with him.

My condolences to the family. What a kind, intelligent, wonderful man whom I will always remember as my mentor and fellow colleague who hired me as French teacher right out of college at Detroit Country Day.

Sending condolences to the Gilbert Family. John always embodied the standards and ethics that made DCDS run. In fact, when I arrived in 1983, he was the venerable elder statesman who was behind the scenes, writing speeches and working on publications, so he did run all sorts of activities. He was incredibly kind to me as a new faculty member, and I was always struck with his sense of fair play. He kept a level head as an advisor to the Headmaster, but also as a source of encouragement to young faculty like myself who were taking on running of the yearbook, dorms, clubs, sports teams, not to mention classrooms. Bless his heart and soul, as Joe H said. The world is much blessed for his years, and his contributions. His insightful gifts to DCD live on through his students, and all whom he helped guide. -- Barbara Harder Becker

My deepest condolences to Dan, Tom, Peter, Eve and all the grandchildren. I have so many fond memories of John and I was so fortunate to be a fellow French teacher in order to discuss our favorite culture and travel destination. It was a pleasure to see him at least once a year after his retirement. I will miss you, John!
