William Kemper Clark
March 6, 1950 - January 13, 2025
In Loving Memory of William Kemper Clark "Billy K," "Butch," "Dad," "Granddaddy".
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Kemper Clark, fondly known by many names: Billy K, Butch, Dad, and Granddaddy. No matter what you called him, he was a man of strength, humor, and unshakable loyalty who left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
Butch lived with purpose and courage. He was a strong-willed yet kind-hearted, quick-witted troublemaker with a heart of gold. While he didn't wear his heart on his sleeve, you always knew he loved you-in his actions, his quiet support, and his unwavering presence. He had a way of teaching lessons and showing care without saying a word.
As "Dad," he was a steadfast guide, teaching resilience and unconditional love. As "Granddaddy," he was larger than life, a playful and loving figure who left his grandchildren with countless stories and cherished memories. As "Billy K" and "Butch," he was a loyal friend, always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or stir up just enough mischief to keep life interesting.
Butch is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia Clark; his loving daughters, Susan Ballou and Amy Grace; his daughters (by choice), April Caldwell and Brittany Flowers; and his sons-in-law, Spenser Ballou and Jason Grace. He was the proud and beloved grandfather of Paige Clark, Kemper Christian, Carson Grace, Addison Ballou, Zoey Grace, Caine Ballou, and Rowan Grace. He also leaves behind his cherished puppy, Amber; his "brothers by another mother," George Harris and Bruce Lohr; his best friend, Lauri Powell, whom Butch would say is his other wife; and a multitude of cousins who held a special place in his heart.
Butch is also survived by his siblings-in-law, Andy Hoffman, Marsha Hoffman, Bernard Kube; and his niece and nephew, Sarah Hoffman and Ben Hoffman.
Butch was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel S. Deal; his father, William Zachery Clark; and his grandmother, Susie Betty Shotwell.
Butch's legacy is one of love, laughter, and boundless strength. He taught us to find joy in life's simplest moments and to face challenges with grit and grace. Though his absence leaves a hole in our hearts, his influence will remain with us forever.
A celebration of Butch's remarkable life will take place on January 25, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Fellowship in Madison, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory by donating to an animal shelter of your choosing or to Davita in Culpeper.
Rest in peace, Butch-our teacher, our mischief-maker, our faithful friend, and our quiet but steadfast hero. Online guestbook is available at
