Howard Dintzis Obituary

Howard Dintzis, 96, passed away peacefully at home in Parkville, Maryland.

Born in Chicago, Howard obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Harvard. He was named the founding director of the Department of Biophysics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1961 and served there for over 30 years. Much of his early career focused on protein structure and synthesis. His elegant experiment studying protein molecule assembly from amino acids is referred to as "the Dintzis experiment"; he is also credited with naming the ribosome. His later research centered on the role of antigen structure on immunologic response.

Howard met and married Renee Zlochover while both were in graduate school. While each pursued their own area of expertise, they also collaborated on scientific projects throughout their careers. Their personal and professional partnership served as an inspiration for many.

Howard was known for his integrity, determination, humor and deep dedication to his family. He inspired countless individuals through his teachings and guidance. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Renee, their children William, Joanne (Jim Meyers) and Suzanne (Russell Van Gelder), and grandchildren Marlin Ballard III, Rachel Van Gelder and Maxwell Van Gelder.

A celebration of Howard Dintzis' life will be held Saturday January 27 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Oakcrest Senior Living, 8820 Walther Blvd, Parkville, MD 21234
