Patrick Fulmer Obituary

Patrick Dennis Fulmer, age 68, of Yuba City, CA, entered the presence of his Lord on Sunday, December 3, 2023. He was born in Durango, Colorado to Mike and Mary Fulmer who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen Fulmer of Yuba City; four children, Annaliese (Danny) Foote of San Luis Obispo, Angelika (Justin) Terry of Gridley, Rachel (Josh) Bruder of Savannah, Georgia, and Micah Fulmer of Yuba City; and 5 grandchildren. He is also survived by his three siblings, Colleen, Mike, and Kim, who reside in Oregon.

Patrick was an amateur radio operator from a young age and belonged to the Yuba-Sutter Amateur Radio Club. His call sign was KI6ZX, or as his family often heard "kilowatt, India, six, zulu, X-ray" as he chatted with other HAMs!

During family camping trips he often sat by the fire playing his guitar and singing softly. This heroic act kept the bears away on many trips to Lassen National Park.

Patrick was an active member of his church, Calvary Chapel of Gridley. He was passionate about the church's short term missions to Mexico. He practiced his Spanish language throughout the year in preparation.

He performed in the local Handel's Messiah holiday choral. His kids know the tenor part regardless of their vocal ranges.

Patrick worked as an alarm technician for Honeywell for 21 years. The profession suited his obsession with all things electronic. Many weekends were spent at Radio Shack tinkering with wires and circuits.

He had a full life surrounded by family and friends who loved him. His smile could light up a room. He battled Alzheimer's Disease in his later years and while he will be very missed by his family, they are relieved that he is no longer suffering.

I first met Pat through a mutual friend of ours, Jim Wyland. Both Jim and Pat were my Elmers (resource/teachers) for Ham Radio. Pat had a rather unusual gift for Morse Code and was able to send and receive this old form of communication at a staggering rate of 40 words per minute. Of course, Jim and I were nowhere near that fast, so we relied on a computer to help us send and receive. At first, Jim recognized who it was on the radio and he said, "Watch this..." At first, I was confused, because he contacted Pat and we were going at about 10 words per minute, but Jim asked him if he minded speeding up a bit. Pat's response was, "Yes, but keep it under 35 words per minute, I'm not feeling so good tonight." I thought he was joking or he also had a computer, but Jim said, "No, he has nothing special over there. Just a straight key, tube set radio and an antenna he built himself." I would later meet Pat for the first time and realize that everything Jim said was true. He was an amazing radio operator, as was his father Mike. --Wade KN6WX

I remember Pat walking around the house with a paper plate in his hands as though he was driving a car, and making car sounds as he walked around.
