Lord Steel of Aikwood
April 15, 2024
Hamish was school captain at Watson's. He was a year older than me and a year above but Ii was in awe of him and we were great friends. In the summer of 1956 we spent a fortnight grouse beating in the Esk valley and with our first week's wage of £7.50 we bought for £15 a Morris 8 1932 which had been used by a local farmer as a hen coop. It had no windows and the brake only operated on one wheel. Hamish taught me to drive (accelerator between clutch and brake pedals) and at the end I bought out his share, painted it bright blue and took it back to Edinburgh where I sold it for £25! We used it irresponsibly uninsured and untaxed to drive up and down to the local in Edzell. (Mentioned on page 20 of my autobiography). I only once met him as an adult in Princes St but will never forget our time together. Unfortunately we shall be away on holiday the week of his funeral. David Steel
