Betty GILCHRIST Obituary

GILCHRIST
Betty Dalziell Craig
Died peacefully,
at The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Beloved wife of 63 years to the late Bill, mother to Sarah and the late Julie, cherished grandmother to Marcus, Kevin, Maxwell, Alexander and Scott and great-grandmother to Veronica, Ailie, Wild, Marion and Myra Julie. Betty would have met her sixth great-grandchild this January.
Betty was born in 1935 in Aberdeen, where she attended St Margaret's School for Girls on a scholarship and later Aberdeen University.
She trained as a teacher, riding her moped to and from teacher training college and taught at Clober Primary School in Milngavie for 29 years.
Betty was a force of nature, intelligent and strong willed. She was articulate, perceptive, often strict and had a very sharp wit. Betty's family was her pride and joy. She had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, travelling to Canada whenever she could to visit them and offering cherished care to Max and Scott after Julie's passing.
Her husband Bill was her best friend and they were admired amongst their community for their affection for one other.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Milngavie Manor who made Betty's last years safe, fun and memorable!
We will not forget your kindness.
A Thanksgiving service will be held at Kilmardinny House, Kilmardinny Ave, Bearsden, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11 am, all are welcome.
Please join the family for refreshments afterwards. Donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, can be made to Marie Curie in loving memory of Betty.

My condolences for the loss of Auntie Betty. One of my fondest memories was when my Dad and Mom sent me over to Scotland to visit with my Auntie Betty and Uncle Bill as a teen. They were lovely people and will be missed.

I got to know Betty later in her life through my son in law, Max. I visited Betty at her care home and enjoyed many wonderful chats with her about her young life. Many stories about her holidays in France and how much she enjoyed visiting her large family in Canada. She was a force of nature, very astute and funny, she made me laugh on so many levels. I will miss those chats. I hope my soon to be grandchild has some of Betty's spirit and tenacity to see them through life.If so I'm sure they will be just fine.
A fond farewell Betty and rest in peace

Betty and Bill and Hamish and I moved into our new homes in Crawford Road Milngavie within weeks of each other in 1965.
Immediately we were linked with the strong Aberdeen connection and very quickly a long and lasting friendship ensued
Amongst my many wonderful memories are family Christmas Days spent together(hosting alternate years ! ),numerous birthday parties ,dinner parties,RSNO concerts, games of Bridge played after a delicious dinner and several glasses of wine ! and latterly weekly Monopoly in the afternoon!
Through good times and bad we were always there for each other We shared laughter and tears and cherished our friendship
I miss them both very much and am so glad to have had them as dear friends

We lived next door to Bill and Betty for about 7 years and they were wonderful neighbours, despite the difference in ages of our children. We became great friends and would share news, good and bad. An abiding memory is Betty turning up on our doorstep with a bottle of sherry and two glasses to celebrate Sarah's good exam results! We kept in touch after we left and visited every time we came back to Milngavie. She is quite unforgettable and we shall miss her.
