Thomas Pletcher Obituary

Thomas Dwight Pletcher

June 14, 1946 - March 22, 2021

Tom Pletcher, 74, of Minneapolis, passed away March 22, 2021 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN due to complications associated with a short battle with COVID-19.

Tom was born June 14, 1946 in Duluth, MN to Bill and Ruth Pletcher and graduated from Morgan Park High School. He later received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Metropolitan State University.  He was an avid reader and self taught in many areas of interest to him, including languages, and world history.  He could speak with knowledge on endless topics of interest.  He could communicate with people; he enjoyed a good conversation.

Tom was an adventurer and explored a wide range of interests - everything from rock climbing, scuba diving, running, skiing, hiking, camping, and bowhunting to genealogy, photography, building computers, and tying fishing lures. Tom had a love of traveling and traveled extensively both domestically and internationally.

Tom was a US Navy Veteran and served as a Sonar Tech on the USS Willis A Lee, from 1964-1968.  He was stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia and served in a support role for the Vietnam War, traveling throughout the Mediterranean region.  After returning from the service, Tom worked as a chemical dependency counselor at Prodigal House and the Veterans Hospital.

Tom is survived by his siblings, Claudia Maki and Bruce (Ginger) Pletcher of Duluth; his two children, Matt (Michele) Pletcher of Robbinsdale and Jennifer LaBine of Big Lake; four grandchildren, Sophie, Kate, Marilyn, and Paul; his niece and nephew, Carrie Maki and Michael Maki of Duluth; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church of Plymouth on Saturday, June 26th at 11:00 a.m.  Please note that masks are required.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s name can be made to The Sierra Club Foundation.

I met Tom at UMD in 1966. Over the years we reconnected a few times, the last being back at UMD for the NEMBA book awards. Since I had not heard from him in quite sometime, I checked on the internet, and was saddedned to find he had passed away. I cherished the friendship we had, and will always remember our fishing trips up the Northshore and a winter snowshoe hike across St. Louis Bay to one of the Islands. RIP ols friend.

Tom played an important part of my legacy from Prodigal House in June of 1977 and on for many years hence. I am so sorry for his passing and for his family who has to go on without him. Rest in peace Tom and know you made a difference in the world around you.

We are still in Michigan on a family vacation so I regretfully cannot make the service today. I want to send my love and prayers to the family. I want you to know that I have and always will think of Tom often. He has played a lasting role in my life.

Love,
Paul Blake
