Khalid SANDHU Obituary

Q.S.O.
Verily, to God we belong, and to Him we shall return.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Khalid Rashid Sandhu Q.S.O., beloved husband of Dr. Razia Sandhu and cherished father of Dr. Imran Sandhu. Dr. Sandhu arrived in Wellington from Pakistan in 1970 and quickly became a foundational figure in New Zealand's Muslim community. He was a former President of the International Muslim Association of New Zealand (IMAN) and a founding member and past President of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), where he played a key role in shaping national Muslim representation. His commitment to fostering interfaith harmony led him to co-found the Wellington Interfaith Council, where he worked tirelessly to build understanding between diverse faith communities. Beyond his contributions to the Muslim community, Dr. Sandhu was a dedicated physician. He and his wife, Dr. Razia Sandhu, served as general practitioners at their medical practice in Kilbirnie for over 30 years, from 1979 to 2010, providing compassionate care to generations of New Zealanders. Dr. Sandhu was also a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Wellington, through which he contributed to various charitable and community initiatives. His lifelong dedication to service, healthcare, and interfaith dialogue left a profound and positive impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His viewing will be on Tuesday, 25 February, from 12.30 to 1.30pm at Harbour City Funeral Home, Kilbirnie. The funeral (Janaza) will follow at 2.30pm at Makara Cemetery on Tuesday, 25 February. For further information, please contact 021 381 885.
His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his community will be dearly missed.

I am a little behind in seeing Dr Sandhu's death notice, but I can say that while I lived in Newtown, he was my doctor for 15 years. He spent a lot of energy trying to find the cause of my fatigue and eventually referred me to a Psychiatrist who said I was not depressed but that my brain wiring changed my work pressure into what seemed like depression He prescribed medication for it and I still take it. This made a dramatic change in my life and it came about due to Dr Sandhu's perseverance. I am eternally grateful to him.

I knew Khalid and Razia in the early 1980s when I called on them as a pharmaceutical rep. They were always very welcoming and took a genuine interest in the information I had. My condolences to Razia and family.

Sincere sympathy in the loss of your lovely husband $ father.. As a new mum 46 years ago Dr Sandhu was always positive & reassuring in our care for our two sons. I am so thankful that he started my husband on medication all those years ago & we are still healthy & happy in our family & retirement.
Remembered with love,
