I had the privilege of being taught by Professor Delbrück during my middle school years in Königsfeld/Germany. He was a wonderful teacher whose inspiring and thoughtful lessons deepened my appreciation for the German language and its literary heritage. I truly enjoyed being in his class and remain grateful for the joy he conveyed in both the language and the teaching itself.

Hansgerd gave so much to the academic community at Victoria, and his service to languages in particular was unstinting. His sober exterior hid a sharp wit, warm heart and sincere desire to do what was right and best in a difficult work environment. He was the first to enter the lists to fight for the survival of language learning at Victoria. He gave his professional life to this end. It has been an ongoing battle, and there have been many losses. But he left his mark on many student lives, opening their minds to other cultural perspectives and nothing can take away from this lasting and significant gain.

Professor Delbrück war ein guter und sanftmütiger Mann. Ich war sehr traurig, als ich von seinem Tod hörte. Mein Mitgefühl gilt seiner trauernden Familie und seinen Freunden.

I am very sad to learn of Prof Delbruck's passing. He was a wonderful teacher and very kind to me when my brother died while I was a student. May he rest in peace.
