Aged 86, suffering from cancer, dementia and the after effects of a stroke, Gerald died on Friday 27 March 2026, at Te Hopai Hospital, Wellington, where he had received very kind care for five months. Born and educated in Dunedin; moved to Wellington to join Foreign Affairs where his overseas postings included Apia, New York, Moscow, Hong Kong, Port Moresby, Moscow again, and Seoul; retired in Wellington – at first in Kelburn, then Oriental Bay. Dearly loved husband of Caroline (née Scott) for 54 years, son of the late Watson and Irene McGhie of Dunedin, brother of the late John. In accordance with Gerald's wishes, there will be no funeral.
