Died Sunday, May 18, 2025, aged 100, at Merivale Retirement Village, Christchurch. Beloved husband of the late Ming Simpson (d.2012), father of Andrew, Jane, and Hugh, and grandfather of his only grandchild, Francis.

Messages may be addressed to the family of the late John Simpson, C/- PO Box 26051, Christchurch 8148. Vigil of prayers, music and eulogies will be held in the Church on Wednesday, May 21, at 5.00pm. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Manchester Street, 373 Manchester Street, Christchurch, on Thursday, May 22, at 10.30am, followed by interment at Avonhead Memorial Cemetery.

My deepest sympathy to the Simpson family at the passing of their father. Professor John Simpson and I served for many years on the Catholic Cathedral Trust until soon before the earthquakes of 2010-11 destroyed the iconic building in our care. John was a marvellous member of that group. He was considerate of others' points of view and learned in his own contributions to discussions around the table. He and I also shared a birthday, albeit 25 years apart.
Much of his own collection of artworks in many genres he generously donated for research and public enjoyment.
He cared for his family and his friends. Farewell to a fine centenarian.
