This is just a personal note to extend to family members sincere condolences and deepest sympathy in the sad loss of Bill Sutton. No words can really touch the grief and sadness that the family feel, but I am sure the kindness and support of family and friends will have been of comfort at this time. Bill and I were part of the Labour Party and he was an excellent colleague during our time in parliament.

I met Bill when we were students in Dunedin in the early 1960s,initially in Knox college and then shared a flat at 66 Clyde St; an eccentric and extremely bright man, rough around the edges ,kind and generous, and a politico to his bones..not afraid to share unpopular views and the first 'leftie' I knew.We participated in anti-Vietnam war marches and other related activities and Bill was a committed Labour man from then.
Our paths crossed infrequently after Uni but I visited him about two years ago at his home in Taradale, which was immaculate ; walls full of lovely paintings. He had lost interest in the labour party by then (a symptom I suspect) and it was clear to me he was in the early stages of dementia which he acknowledged obliquely.

I send my deepest sympathies to Bill's family at this sad time.

Bill was a colleague of mine in Parliament from 1984-1990. He was a member of the large Class of 84 which came into the Pabour Party's Parliamentary Caucus with the election of David Lange. Bill was MP for Hawke"s Bay.

I remember Bill as a good colleague, very diligent, and very rational. His scientific background was a big asset to us.

May Bill rest in peace now.

Helen Clark,

Former Prime Minister, 1999-2008.

MP for Mt Albert, 1981-2009.
