Jane and family, I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I would like to share here that Bill was my friend. I sent him an email on March 8 telling him I was wondering how he was getting along. Yesterday, I mentioned to my daughter that he did not answer, and I was concerned. She then found this news and informed me.
I met Bill during my sabbatical leave from UC Davis to Massey in 2005. He introduced me to the vets in private practice and welcomed my two children, Kenny and Shara, who accompanied me on my 6-month visit. I knew no one in New Zealand when I arrived. I was in private practice before my university career, and I relate to the equine practitioner a bit more than my academic colleagues. I immediately bonded with Bill, and we enjoyed sharing the challenges of equine vet med and family things. For my 70th birthday, I returned to New Zealand and met up with Bill Jane and his family, and we had a wonderful visit. I had planned to return this year for a visit with Bill. For many people in New Zealand and me, he was taken too soon.
There is grief here many miles away in another country for this fine man. I hope we can do something special to honor and remember Bill, perhaps a lecture in his name on something in equine medicine. He really enjoyed the investigative aspects of veterinary medicine.
Sincerely,

Dear Jane, Emma, Clifford & Alice,
So sorry that can not make it to Bill's farewell. A close friend for over 40 years he was a fount of knowledge and great assistance to me in my work. Always able to give practical feedback. Even over the last year or so we were able to exchange news and information.
Shared so many good times at the races, sales and Longridge. His memory will always remain and thinking of you all from afar at this sad time.
Will stay in touch and hope to see you all later in the year

To the Ewen family.
My sincere condolences of the passing away of Bill.
I first met him when working at Blandford lodge back in the early 80s.
He was a great vet and a truly great guy to deal with.
I was shocked when I heard the sad news.
Kindest regards
Mike Austin.
